Common Fire Door Installation Mistakes to Avoid

2 January 2026

A fire door is only effective if installed correctly. Discover the most common installation errors that compromise fire safety and how to ensure compliance.

Fire doors are precision safety devices. Even small installation errors can render them non-compliant and ineffective in a fire. Here are the mistakes we see most often.

Common Installation Errors

  • Incorrect Gap Sizes: The gap between the door and frame must be 2–4mm. Too large and smoke can pass through; too small and the door won’t close properly.
  • Missing or Damaged Intumescent Strips: These strips expand when heated to seal gaps. If they’re missing, painted over, or damaged, the door won’t provide its rated protection.
  • Wrong Number of Hinges: Fire doors require a minimum of three hinges. Using only two is a common shortcut that weakens the door’s performance.
  • Non-Rated Hardware: Handles, locks, and letter plates must be fire-rated. Standard hardware can create weak points in the door’s fire resistance.
  • Propping Doors Open: Fire doors must be self-closing. If they need to be held open, only approved electromagnetic hold-open devices linked to the fire alarm should be used.

The Importance of Certification

A properly installed fire door should have a visible certification label or plug on the top edge. This confirms the door has been tested and meets the required standard.
