Light-Filled Extension

How to Maximise Natural Light in Your Extension

19 December 2025

Natural light transforms a living space. Discover design strategies, glazing options, and layout tips to flood your new extension with daylight.

One of the biggest advantages of building an extension is the opportunity to design a space filled with natural light. The right glazing and layout choices can make your new room feel bright, spacious, and connected to the outdoors.

Glazing Options

  • Bi-Fold Doors: Concertina-style doors that fold back to fully open one wall, blurring the boundary between inside and outside.
  • Sliding Doors: Large glass panels that slide to one side. They offer maximum glass area with minimal frame, and don’t require swing space.
  • Roof Lanterns and Skylights: Overhead glazing brings light deep into the room, particularly effective in single-storey extensions where rear windows alone may not suffice.
  • Clerestory Windows: High-level windows positioned near the ceiling line, bringing light in without compromising privacy.

Layout Tips

  • Position living areas nearest to the glazing
  • Use light-coloured flooring and walls to reflect and amplify natural light
  • Avoid placing tall furniture or partitions that block light flow
  • Consider the orientation of your extension — south-facing gets the most sun
